What if Jesus really meant what he said?

Red Letter Christians is bringing back in-person “Red Letter Revivals” this year! It’s time for a Christianity that looks like Jesus again. It’s time for gospel preaching and prophetic witness. It’s time to return to the things Jesus said. It’s revival time!

The goal of this series of Red Letter Revivals is to stand in direct contrast to the Christian nationalism we know will be on display during the ongoing election cycle and to demonstrate to the country that there is a growing movement of Christians who want love, peace, justice, and nonviolence to be at the core of our policies on war, immigration, guns, healthcare, racial justice, the death penalty, and more.

Red Letter Christians will bring together a broad coalition of faith and nonprofit leaders to set the table for collaboration and equip them with the network needed to increase the impact of our collective work, both now and in the future.

With Red Letter Revivals, the Red Letter Christians movement will shape the very culture of Christianity in our country to have Christ’s love at its core. These revivals will serve as mechanisms for movement building, coalescing, partnering with fellow people of faith, faith communities, and co-laboring organizations.

Can we count on your support to bring this vision to life? Make a gift today to help us revolutionize Christianity in the lead up to the 2024 elections.

Background

The Red Letter Revival is about Jesus. The name hearkens back to the old Bibles that highlighted the words of Jesus in red.

Jesus is simply the lens through which we understand the Bible and the world we live in. He is the word made flesh, showing us what God’s love looks like with skin on.

We grieve the fact that one of the biggest obstacles to Christ is us — Christians — when we proclaim Jesus with our mouths but betray him with our actions.

No one is perfect, but too often we Christians have pretended to be. We’ve become known more for who we’ve excluded than for who we’ve embraced, more for what we’re against than what we’re for. We have taken our eyes off Jesus — and focused on things Jesus didn’t focus on and forgotten things Jesus never forgot. This revival is about seeking God together for a Christianity that acts like Jesus again.

We are political but not partisan. We are concerned about the state of our country and about the decisions we Christians make in the public square. We care about the things Jesus cares about — like welcoming the stranger, caring for the sick, visiting the imprisoned, sharing food with the hungry… the things Christ said we do for him when we do them for the least in our world.

It was Frederick Douglass who once said, “Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference.” We need God to help us overcome this divide.

WE NEED A REVIVAL.

As Jesus taught us to pray, we want to see the kingdom come “on earth as it is in heaven.” God’s vision for the world — we want to see God’s kingdom come. Whether you love Christianity or hate it, whether you are over-churched or un-churched, you are welcome to the Red Letter Revival.

FAQs

What does it cost to attend?

Red Letter Revivals are free to attend and open to the public. All are welcome.

Who is welcome?

The Red Letter Revival is a protected, loving, Spirit-filled space for all people, especially for those hurt or marginalized by church or society. We welcome, celebrate, and affirm every person as a child of God, made in the image of God, liberal or conservative, gay or straight, rich or poor, Black or Brown or white. Jesus’ practice in the gospels leaves no room for exception. We invite those curious about Jesus, even if troubled by Christians. Red Letter Revival renounces self-righteousness and entitlement. We want the Spirit to move freely among us in a space that is safe for everyone.

Where will they be?

In 2024, Revivals will be held at:

  • Newsong Church in Santa Ana, California on the evening of August 31
  • In Philadelphia this October (details coming soon)
  • Virtually this November (details coming soon)

Our team is currently in calls with collaborative partners to nail down remaining details. We will be announcing that as soon as possible, so stay tuned via email and on social media.

How many people are you expecting?

Depending on the final locations, we’re expecting 500-1,000 people for each event.

What is the format of revivals?

Revivals will consist of several parts:

  • Conference: Roughly 100 faith and community leaders will gather for a series of professional workshops to share high impact solutions and build networks to collectively tackle pressing issues in each local context. Due to limited capacity, the conference portion of the event is by invitation only. If you wish to be considered for participation or if you wish to nominate someone to participate, please send the name, bio, and email address of the candidate to [email protected]
  • Encounters: Encounters are an opportunity for the roughly 100 faith and community leaders gathered to visit various sites where injustice is occurring and see the solutions of our partners in action. Small groups of leaders will travel to select sites during the conference portion of each event. The guidelines for participation are the same as those of the conference portion of the event.
  • Revival: An evening “Revival” will conclude the event. This celebration will be open to the public and feature keynote speakers and musicians. This will serve as a wider, community invitation to experience a movement of faith-filled people who want to see and build a nation that responds to the crises of war, immigration, guns, healthcare, and racism with compassion for humanity and the earth. This live streamed event will be open to members of the media and stand in direct contrast to the toxic forms of “Christianity” that are on display this election season.
