SUMMARY:Christ is Still in the Rubble: A Liturgy of Sumud featuring a Sermon by Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac
DESCRIPTION:This Advent\, while global Christians prepare to commemorate the arrival of the Prince of Peace\, our Palestinian kin in Gaza suffer unthinkable violence – again. Their cries for deliverance\, echoing those of two millennia ago\, seem to be falling unheard in the United States for the second year in a row.  \n\nTo see their pain and hear their cries\, US Christians must move beyond information to transformation…from webinar to worship. \nOn 20 December 2024\, a number of organizations – Christ at the Checkpoint\, Christmas Lutheran Church\, Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP)\, Global Immersion\, Red Letter Christians\, Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center\, Samud Initiative of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – are joining forces in solidarity to simulcast a live worship gathering guided by Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac and the team at Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. \nLast year\, Rev. Munther Isaac’s Christ in the Rubble Sermon became a phenomenon in Christian communities and the world thanks to the service’s prophetic message calling for justice in Palestine. This year\, Christ is Still in the Rubble\, and Rev. Dr. Isaac will again deliver an Advent message to the world – live from Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. Join us via livestream at 10 AM ET / 5 PM Jerusalem on Friday\, 20 December 2024 to hear his words. The worship service will be in Arabic with English captions and Rev. Dr. Isaac’s sermon will be delivered in English.\n \nRegistration is encouraged to stay up to date on the event with reminders\, information about the livestream\, and other offerings from our co-sponsoring organizations.\n\nRegister Now\nJoin us live on the Red Letter Christians Facebook page and website.

SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Khristi Lauren Adams
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to have Khristi Lauren Adams as our November Book Club guest; she’ll be in conversation with Susan Wood to discuss her book\, “Womanish Theology: Discovering God through the Lens of Black Girlhood.” \nAbout the Book:\nKhristi Lauren Adams’s faith was first shaped by her experiences as a Black girl-learning about Scripture from her grandmother\, Mama Hattie; “playing church” with her seven cousins over summer vacation; and grieving the murder of her sixteen-year-old friend when she was just fifteen. \nIn Womanish Theology\, Adams reflects on those experiences\, inviting readers to learn from a new perspective and guiding them to a deeper understanding of their own spirituality. \nThis groundbreaking book introduces a new branch of theological thought Adams calls womanish\, as a play on womanist (the theology of Black womanhood). “Womanish\,” remembers Adams\, is a term Black mothers used for young girls as they grew more interested in doing grown-up things. Adams draws on her own life story as well as the life stories of other Black girls to explore theological concepts such as Scripture\, theodicy\, salvation\, prayer\, neighborly love\, and the image of God. \nThrough this journey\, readers will learn that theology is for everyone and that the whole community of God can learn from the spiritual insights of Black girls. \nAbout the Author:\nKhristi Lauren Adams is a speaker\, author\, youth advocate and ordained Baptist minister. Khristi is the author of Parable of the Brown Girl which is published by Fortress Press. The book highlights the cultural and spiritual truths that emerge from the lives of young black girls. Parable of the Brown Girl has received awards for Best Young Adult Book from The African American Literary Awards and the New York Black Librarians Caucus. \nHer second book\, Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way was released in the Spring of 2022 with Broadleaf Books. A middle grade version of the book titled Black Girls Unbossed: Young World Changers Leading the Way was also released with Beaming Books. Unbossed was a 2023 runner up for the Los Angeles Book Festival and Black Girls Unbossed is a 2023 finalist for a Foreword INDIES Book of the Year award in the Juvenile Nonfiction category. \nKhristi is the Executive Director of Community and Belonging for the St. Paul’s School’s\, a family of independent schools in Baltimore County\, MD. She previously worked as Dean of Spiritual Life & Equity and instructor of Religious Studies at the Hill School. She is the former Founder & Director of “The Becoming Conference”\, an annual conference and leadership cohort designed to empower\, educate & inspire girls between the ages of 13-18. \nKhristi is a graduate of Temple University with a degree in Advertising and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where she obtained a Master of Divinity degree. She is a 2017 graduate of “Lead New Jersey”\, a select group of thought-leaders from the public\, social\, and private sectors of NJ and the surrounding communities. She also currently serves as a mentor for The Garden Initiative for Black Women’s Religious Activism\, a nine-month peer-to-peer and intergenerational mentorship program for black women leaders across religious traditions in the United States. \nKhristi is also a 2024 Alumni Service Awardee for Princeton Seminary which highlights the outstanding efforts of alumni who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing the seminary’s mission and values. \nWe will be live on all of our socials. Register to join us on Zoom!\nFind us streaming live on Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, Twitter\, or YouTube channels.

SUMMARY:Vote for Love for the Historically Marginalized
DESCRIPTION:It’s revival time.\nOn the four nights before the presidential election on November 5th\, Red Letter Christians is hosting our final Red Letter Revival of this year to create a space for Christians who want to see love and justice at the center of our policies. Instead of solely condemning the way our faith is being manipulated for political gain this election season\, we’re “practicing something better\,” as our friend Richard Rohr says.  There’s that old saying “Be the change you want to see in the world”… and we’re committed to being the change we want to see in the Church.  And we need YOU.  \nOne of the promises of Scripture is this – “perfect love casteth out fear.”  We are standing on that promise\, and raising the questions – \nWhat would our country look like if love rather than fear was shaping our policies? \nWhat does it look like to love our neighbor as ourselves? \nWhat does that mean on immigration? Guns? Militarism? Poverty? Criminal justice? And more? \nWhat does love look like in public? \nHow does loving my neighbor shape the way I think about policies that affect their lives? \nTogether\, we’ll challenge the way Christianity is often distorted and co-opted for political agendas that do not center Jesus and the needs of the poor and vulnerable\, those Christ called “the least of these.”   \nMark your calendar for these powerful\, life-giving events taking place on November 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd\, and 4th\, starting at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT.  We’ll be broadcasting LIVE on all our platforms\, and you won’t want to miss it!  \nFeaturing:\n\n\nAaron Niequist\, Liturgist and Writer\n\n\nThe Most Reverend Michael B. Curry\, 27th Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n*** These events are free and open to the public with an optional donation. If you can chip in\, every dollar helps Red Letter Christians continue to push our faith closer to one that looks like Jesus. Thank you for investing in this work!

SUMMARY:Vote for Love for Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:The Urgency of Immigration Advocacy:  Communities\, Prisons\, Borders and the Body of Christ\nCo-sponsor: Nootbaar Institute on Law\, Religion and Ethics\, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law \nExpert guests will explore the multifaceted nature of our country’s immigration crisis – both how it is deeply rooted in local communities at the border\, and how these local injustices fit into a broken\, inhumane national immigration system urgently needing reform in a world where 120 million people have been forcibly displaced. \nSpeakers will challenge attendees to consider how the church can more meaningfully respond to the Gospel’s clarion call to welcome the stranger. The speakers will also highlight the urgent need to care for immigrants within the prison system\, many of whom are unjustly detained and face compounded trauma. \nAs fellow Christians\, the advocates will call on the church to step into these spaces\, offering both practical support and a prophetic witness that reflects the radical hospitality of the Gospel. Participants will be asked to grapple with how race\, class\, and systems of oppression intersect with the immigration crisis. This panel will challenge the church to reimagine its role in standing with the stranger\, the prisoner\, and the most marginalized in our society. \nModerator:\nJennifer Lee Koh\, Associate Professor of Law & Co-Director of the Nootbaar Institute on Law\, Religion and Ethics\, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nGuerline Jozef\, Co-Founder & Executive Director\, Haitian Bridge Alliance\n\n\nTin Nguyen\, Program Director\, Decarcerate Orange County\n\n\nKimberly Serrano – director for the Center of Inclusion and Belonging at the American Immigration Council\n\n\n\n\n*** These events are free and open to the public with an optional donation. SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Eliza Griswold
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to have October’s featured guest Eliza Griswold talking about her latest book\, “Circle of Hope: A Reckoning of Love\, Power and Justice in an American Church” with Shane Claiborne and Katie Jo Brotherton. \nAbout the Book: \n“Circle of Hope” is an intimate portrait of a church\, its radical mission\, and its riveting crisis. “The revolution I wanted to be part of was in the church.” \nAmericans have been leaving their churches. Some drift away. Some stay home. And some have been searching for—and finding—more authentic ways to find and follow Jesus. \nThis is the story of one such “radical outpost of Jesus followers” dedicated to service\, the Sermon on the Mount\, and working toward justice for all in this life\, not just salvation for some in the next. Part of a little-known yet influential movement at the edge of American evangelicalism\, Philadelphia’s Circle of Hope grew for forty years\, planted four congregations\, and then found itself in crisis. \nThe story that follows is an American allegory full of questions with urgent relevance for so many of us\, not just the faithful: How do we commit to one another and our better selves in a fracturing world? Where does power live? Can it be shared? How do we make “the least of these” welcome? \nBuilding on years of deep reporting\, the Pulitzer Prize winner Eliza Griswold has crafted an intimate\, immersive\, tenderhearted portrait of a community\, as well as a riveting chronicle of its transformation\, bearing witness to the ways a deeply committed membership and their team of devoted pastors are striving toward change that might help their church survive. Through generational rifts\, an increasingly politicized religious landscape\, a pandemic that prevented gathering to worship\, and a rise in foundation-shaking activism\, Circle of Hope tells a propulsive\, layered story of what we do to stay true to our beliefs. It is a soaring\, searing examination of what it means for us to love\, to grow\, and to disagree. \nAbout the Author: \nEliza Griswold is the author of six books of poetry and nonfiction\, all published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux. Her book Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction. She writes for The New Yorker\, is the Ferris Professor and Director of the Program in Journalism at Princeton University\, and lives in New Jersey with her husband and son. \nWe will be live on all of our socials. Register to join us on Zoom!\nFind us streaming live on Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, Twitter\, or YouTube channels.

SUMMARY:Setting the Table: Creating a Safe Space for Christian Women in Dialogue about the Future of our Nation and the Church
DESCRIPTION:As Christian women in this divided time\, we believe it is important to commune together through shared meals and to prayerfully listen to one another in order to ask what God is doing in this moment. How do we see this movement theologically and spiritually? It is through relationships with one another and the intentional building of mutual trust that opponents can become friends\, that we can speak to one another instead of past each other\, and that we can move forward together. \nThis event will include breakfast\, conversation at tables and a closing liturgy with Christian women leaders representing communities from a range of political perspectives. \nThis event is by invitation only as has a registration fee of $25. Please contact revivals@redletterchristians.org if you wish to attend.

SUMMARY:The Body of Christ in the American Empire (Red Letter Revival Night 1)
DESCRIPTION:On the first evening of the Red Letter Revival – Philadelphia\, believers will gather at The Historic African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas to reflect on the chaos of injustice and ignite our spirits in preparation to birth a more just world with Christ’s love at its core. In this divisive election season\, we’ll explore how to strategize and mobilize to put love at the center of our policies on racial justice\, gun violence\, housing\, poverty\, voter engagement\, and war and how to uproot Christian nationalism which distorts our faith and threatens the neighbors we are called to love. \n\n  \nWelcome & Introduction:\nThe Very Rev. Canon Martini Shaw\, Seventeenth Rector of the Historic African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas \nThe Rev. Charles (Chaz) Lattimore Howard\, PhD\, University Chaplain and Vice President for Social Equity & Community\, University of Pennsylvania \nLisa Sharon Harper\, Founder & President\, Freedom Road LLC & Board Member\, RLC \nShane Claiborne\, Co-founder\, Red Letter Christians \nPreacher:\nRev. Traci deVon Blackmon\nRev. Traci Blackmon lives by the mantra: Faith hears\, Love heals\, and Hope builds. Blackmon served as Associate General Minister & Vice-President of the United Church of Christ\, a Christian denomination of approximately 750\,000 members dispersed among 5\,000 churches within the United States. In that role\, she led the Justice and Local Church Ministries. From 2009 through 2020\, Rev. Blackmon pastored Christ The King United Church of Christ\, a congregation anchored in Florissant\, MO\, in St. Louis County. Under her leadership\, Christ The King served as a sanctuary for community engagement\, and the denomination launched several anchor initiatives focused on congregational education\, engagement\, and social action. Following the police killing of Michael Brown\, Jr. in nearby Ferguson\, the church hosted the first city-wide community engagement meeting and remained a gathering site for faith-based organizing efforts. \nPrior to 2009\, Rev. Blackmon served as a pastor of Simpson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and worked as a licensed registered nurse\, healthcare administrator\, and community organizer for several healthcare delivery systems. She was appointed chair of the Criminal Justice Reform Task Force of the Ferguson Commission\, which released the ‘Forward Through Ferguson: A Path Toward Racial Equity’ report in 2015\, calling for sweeping changes in policing\, the courts\, child well-being\, and economic mobility. In 2012\, she was appointed to the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships by Barack Obama. \nRev. SUMMARY:SPECIAL EVENT: Faith Forum on Peace in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free and live virtual Conscientious Objectors’ Faith Forum on October 7 at 12 PM ET in honor of the lives lost on October 7 and since October 7.\n\nWe will be joined by people who refused to engage in the violence\, inviting us to ask the question\, “What does courage look like for me?” We welcome special guests from Israel and Palestine\, conscientious objectors who refused to fight for Hamas and for the Israeli military\, along with US veterans who became peacemakers. \n\nSofia Orr: Israeli conscientious objector who refused to serve in the IDF\nAhmed Helou: Former Hamas youth member who has lost over 80 family members to the war on Gaza\nJoy Metzler: U.S. conscientious objector and Airforce Academy graduate\, 2 LT\nDiana Oestreich: Peacemaker and former U.S. war veteran\n\nWhat better way to honor the lives lost on October 7th\, and since October 7th\, than by celebrating the courageous people who have refused to participate in the violence.  You will hear from modern day heroes for peace as they share their stories of why they choose not to participate in the escalating violence of war. And they will invite us to ask the question\, “What does courage look like — for me?”  \nThere is a rich history when it comes to conscientious objectors — people who refuse to fight in war because it violates their faith or conscience.  And in particular\, Christians who follow Jesus “the Prince of Peace\,” have been war resisters for centuries\, going back to the earliest days of Christianity.  Let’s take a moment to remember all the lives lost to war and rededicate ourselves to peace.  Violence only begets more violence.  We will not build a better world by killing each other’s children.   \nThis virtual event is sponsored by Red Letter Christians — and it is FREE and open to everyone. \nRegister to join here: RLC Faith Forum with Conscientious Objectors Registration – Zoom \nTo access additional resources for Conscientious Objectors\, click here.\n \nTo access additional resources for Conscientious Objectors\, click here.

SUMMARY:October Monthly Morning Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for October’s Monthly Morning Prayer with our dear guest Danielle Strickland. Danielle wears so many hats – she is a Spiritual Leader\, a Justice Advocate\, a Communicator and Peacemaker. \nDanielle lets Love lead her to inspire\, challenge\, provoke and disrupt the present\, and to live in the future now. Having lived in different cultures and contexts around the world she celebrates diversity and deeply longs for wrong things to be made right. Danielle practices following Jesus daily. This pursuit has led to exciting entrepreneurial exploits (like co-founding multiple charities and non-profits) and a whole host of failures (that we don’t as often talk about). All of this has convinced her of the deep need we all have for hope\, faith\, and love. Her deepest longing is to demonstrate what living that boundless life looks like. \nDanielle has written six books (the latest is The Other Side of Hope)\, has a podcast called The Right Side Up (which recently celebrated half-a-million downloads)\, and speaks to people at events all over the world. Danielle leads Boundless Communications Inc. which launches creative exploits like Women Speakers Collective (liberating voices of women around the globe)\, IMBY (a tiny home movement IN MY BACKYARD)\, Brave Global (preventing human trafficking)\, Infinitum (a way of living deeply)\, and Hagar’s Voice (support and advocacy for survivors of abuse). She lives in Vancouver\, Canada with her three sons and husband Steve. Danielle loves getting outside\, doing new things\, physical adventures\, and she can’t seem to turn down a free lunch. \nShane Claiborne and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove will be hosting as always. We’d so love for you to join us as we pray and reflect on what it means to lead a Christ and love-centered life with intentionality. \nWe will be live on all of our socials; register to join us on Zoom!  \nMorning prayer takes place at the beginning of each month based on the book\, Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals. You can follow along with the readings from Common Prayer at commonprayer.net for free!

SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Scot McKnight
DESCRIPTION:Join us for September’s Book Club with Scot McKnight to read and learn from his book\, “Revelation for the Rest of Us: A Prophetic Call to Follow Jesus as a Dissident Disciple.” McKnight will be in conversation with Shane Claiborne on 30 September at 7 PM ET! \nAbout the Book:\nIn “Revelation for the Rest of Us\,” author Scot McKnight with Cody Matchett explores the timeless message of Revelation and how it speaks to us today with a courageous challenge to be faithful witnesses to Jesus\, while standing against the ever-present reality of worldly authorities. McKnight also addresses the popular misconceptions about the book\, explaining what John means in his use of the images of dragons\, lambs\, and beasts\, and how the symbolism of Revelation speaks powerfully to the present day – though not in the way most people think. He also offers a discipleship manual for discerning the immoralities of political powers and how the church can be both an agent of resistance and transformation. \nAbout the Author:\nScot McKnight is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lisle\, Illinois. He is the author of more than 80 books\, including the award-winning The Jesus Creed as well as The King Jesus Gospel\, A Fellowship of  Differents\, One.Life\, The Blue Parakeet and Kingdom Conspiracy. He maintains an active blog at christianitytoday.com/scot-mcknight. He and his wife\, Kristen\, live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago\, where they enjoy long walks\, gardening\, and cooking. \nWe will be live on all of our socials. Register to join us on Zoom!\nFind us streaming live on Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, Twitter\, or YouTube channels.
