DESCRIPTION:RLC Book Club sits with School(s) for Conversion: 12 Marks of a New Monasticism\, edited by The Rutba House\, and Dr. Jorden Sharick — discussing the various communal attempts to discern the marks of a new monasticism in the inner cities and forgotten landscapes of the Empire that is America. \nJorden Sharick studies race and evangelicalism in the US.  He is currently a Louisville Institute Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University\, where he develops educational programming for the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Research and Education Institute.  He also teaches in Stanford’s Department of Religious Studies.  Jorden’s research focuses on the ways that history\, power\, and identity are transmitted through faith narratives.  His recent projects draw on his fieldwork with leaders in the New Monastic movement to explore the stories that White evangelicals tell about racial justice.  He is particularly interested in the ideas about God\, Christ\, and neighbor such stories imagine; the forms of self-reflection they enable; and the possibilities for justice they open and constrain.  Jorden earned his PhD in religion from Harvard University and his MDiv from Harvard Divinity School.  He has undergraduate degrees from the University of California\, Riverside\, and Moreno Valley Community College. \nAbout the conversation\nTwenty years after School(s) for Conversion was published\, Shane Claiborne and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove revisit the book with Jorden Sharick\, whose research follows the New Monastic movement. More than almost any other genre\, Hip Hop has created space for marginalized voices to speak\, resist\, testify\, and imagine new possibilities.\nIn this program\, we will explore Hip Hop as a prophetic and mystical tradition. Rappers often function as prophets and mystics of marginalized Black and Brown communities\, giving voice to experiences that are too often ignored\, silenced\, or misunderstood. Through their lyrics\, they name injustice\, expose systems of oppression\, wrestle with suffering\, celebrate resilience\, and imagine liberation. \nEven when its language is bold\, brash\, or profane\, Hip Hop can speak a gritty truth on behalf of God’s beloved. DESCRIPTION:Join us for RLC Book Club as we sit with What Grows in Weary Lands and Tish Harrison Warren to discuss how we cultivate a faith that endures. \nTish Harrison Warren is a writer and an Anglican priest. She is the author of several books\, including Liturgy of the Ordinary\, which won Christianity Today’s 2018 Book of the Year\, and Prayer in the Night\, which won Christianity Today’s 2022 Book of the Year and the 2022 ECPA Christian Book of the Year. She formerly wrote a weekly newsletter for The New York Times\, which focused on faith in public discourse and private life. She was also a columnist at Christianity Today. Her articles and essays have appeared in Comment Magazine\, The Point Magazine\, Religion News Service\, and elsewhere. She currently serves as the C.S. Lewis Theological Writer-in-Residence for The Anglican Episcopal House of Studies at Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. She is a senior fellow with the Trinity Forum and an assisting priest at Immanuel Anglican Church. She lives in Austin\, Texas\, with her husband and three children.
