SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Rev. Sharon Risher - June 2022
DESCRIPTION:Gun violence is a public health crisis. It is also a spiritual and moral crisis. In the US\, We have nearly 5 times more gunshops than McDonald restaurants. More Americans have died from guns in the US in the last fifty years than in all the wars in American history. \nJune is gun violence awareness month and the anniversary of the Emanuel AME shooting in Charleston. Join us on June 26th at 7pm EDT for an important discussion with Rev. Sharon Risher about the family she lost in Charleston and her book\, “For Such a Time as This.” You can join on Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.

SUMMARY:RLC Faith Forum on Restorative Justice - June 2022

On June 23rd at 7pm EDT\, Mike Martin will join us along with Sharletta Evans who is at the forefront of the Restorative Justice movement in America. Sharletta’s three year old son\, Casson\, was killed in the cross-fire during a shooting by teenagers. Join us for this special event to hear how they continue to work together to heal the wounds of violence. \nRegister to join us on Zoom or you can join live on Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website.

SUMMARY:Challenging Power and Privilege with The Alternative Seminary
DESCRIPTION:A ten-week online study of the Gospel of Luke\nThursday evenings\, April 21st – June 23rd\, 2022 \n7:00pm – 9:00 pm Eastern Time \nIs Good News for the poor Bad News for many of us in North America? \nThe Gospel of Luke\, addressed to “Most Excellent Theophilus\,” was written for a mixed community that included many socially privileged members who were enjoying the benefits of empire – which means it is perhaps the most relevant Gospel to the North American church.  This ten-week study will explore how Luke directly challenges systems of power and privilege\, while inviting the powerful and privileged out of Empire to the Beloved Community of the reign of God.  We will look at specific themes of Luke’s theology\, including social reversals\, inclusion of sinners and enemies\, forgiveness and mercy\, and many radical teachings on money and possessions.  This will be an intensive course that will wrestle with many deeply challenging texts – especially for people of privilege – and how they challenge us on what it means to live out the reign of God in the midst of American empire and White supremacy today. \nThis course will be facilitated by Will O’Brien\, coordinator of The Alternative Seminary.  The cost for this course will be $100 (or whatever you can afford). \nRegistration is required. You can register at this link: GospelofLuke2022 \nDEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS APRIL 13.  SPACE IS LIMITED. Find more information on Facebook. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Will O’Brien at willobrien59@gmail.com or 267-339-8989. \nThe Alternative Seminary is a program of biblical and theological study and reflection designed to foster an authentic biblical witness in the modern world.  For more information\, see www.alternativeseminary.net.

SUMMARY:Alternative Seminary - The Cross of Christ
DESCRIPTION:The Alternative Seminary invites you to \nTHE CROSS OF CHRIST: A JUSTIFICATION FOR REDEMPTIVE VIOLENCE OR A CALL TO GOSPEL NONVIOLENCE? \nSaturday morning\, March 19th\, 2022 \n10:30 am – 12:30 pm EDT \nFar too frequently\, Christianity has been put at the service of empire – even though the founder of the faith was executed by empire. For two millennia\, the cross of Christ\, the central image of Christian life and thought\, has been wielded to assert “redemptive violence\,” and has been directly or indirectly used to vindicate and even bless human violence.  We will explore the history of violence that has flowed from theologies of atonement. We will revisit the crucifixion of Jesus in its historical context and explore the questions:  Why did Jesus die?  How is his death related to his ministry in the Gospels?  We will reflect on how a more radical understanding of the passion of Christ can impact our discipleship\, and particularly our efforts to witness to justice and shalom in a world of empire\, violence\, and degradation of creation.  This session will be facilitated by Will O’Brien\, coordinator of The Alternative Seminary.  We will also hear from: \n\nRev. Naomi Washington-Leapheart is a Black-queer church girl\, preacher\, teacher\, and activist. She develops spaces of spiritual candor\, disruption\, reflection\, transformation\, and action. Rev. Naomi is an adjunct professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova University and is the founder of Salt | Yeast | Light. \n\n  \n\nRev. Sharon Delgado\, founding director of Earth Justice Ministries and author of the soon-to-be-released The Cross in the Mist of Creation.\n\n  \n\nDasha Saintremy (Rev. DaSaint) is an Afro-Caribbean American\, Womanist\, and founder of LiveLoveLiberate: A Sacred Space for Creative Expressions.\n\n  \nRegistration is required. You can register at this link: \nThe cost is $20 (or whatever you can afford). If you have any questions\, please contact Will O’Brien at willobrien59@gmail.com or 267-339-8989. \nThe Alternative Seminary is a program of biblical and theological study and reflection designed to foster an authentic biblical witness in the modern world.

SUMMARY:The State of Texas vs Melissa Lucio Event
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Lucio has been on death row for fifteen years for the alleged murder of her two-year-old daughter\, Mariah\, who fell down a flight of stairs and died of brain injuries two days later. Melissa is scheduled to be executed on April 27th. Her lawyers believe in her innocence and are working against the odds to get a fresh look at the evidence. The only evidence against Melissa is her confession\, which was given under duress after seven hours of police interrogation in the middle of the night. Melissa was pregnant with twins\, and instead of being able to grieve her daughter’s death\, she was accused of a crime. \nJoin Shane Claiborne and Melissa’s family to discuss the film\, The State of Texas vs Melissa\, and how you can get involved. The film is available on Hulu and Amazon Prime. In honor of International Women’s Day\, the film may also be seen for free at FreeMelissaLucio.org on March 7th & 8th. \nRegister to join on Zoom or join us here on FB live: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QhYrZZyZQaiSwRMkd5nwUg?link_id=10&can_id=773442f75bad72ed6bb4bfd5ffa73b29&source=email-tonight-live-with-shane-claiborne-from-hopes-kitchen&email_referrer=email_1467521&email_subject=tonight-live-with-shane-claiborne-from-hopes-kitchen

SUMMARY:RLC UK Book Club: Looking for Lydia: Encounters that Shape the Church with Author Dr Sally Mann
DESCRIPTION:Dr Sally Mann joins us for an interactive Zoom discussion of her book Looking for Lydia: Encounters that Shape the Church. Please register for this RLC UK Book Club via EventBrite (free or donation). \nIt’s important to us as Red Letter Christians UK to facilitate meaningful justice-fuelled conversations about mission\, locality and community activism. \nWe’re thrilled to welcome author/ minister/ activist Dr Sally Mann to discuss her beautiful\, personal book about her generational family calling to rootedness in their East End community. Sally was part of the original team of activists who launched Red Letter Christians in the UK … so in a number of ways\, this discussion feels like it’s about the importance of deep\, ongoing connection with others as we live for Jesus and justice. \nThis RLC UK Book Club session will be a mixture of hearing from Sally\, discussion and a time for Q&A. We look forward to an evening of deep discussion\, stories and probably a fair bit of laughter. \nAbout this book:\nLooking for Lydia: Encounters that Shape the Church \nDr Sally Mann is the fourth of five generations living and ministering in one East End community\, with a PhD and five lifetimes of stories. Her experiences will make you laugh\, cry and\, if you pay attention\, help you see how much-needed change can happen…Sally brilliantly connects Biblical characters with contemporary people and shows how these individuals have helped shape over 150 years of her family’s ministry in one East London neighbourhood.’\nDr Ash Barker – Seedbeds \n“Sally and Dave love their community. They have a jealous passion to see it thrive. They have resilience which comes from long-term commitment; knowing their dreams of what God might do will take more than a few years of committed service\, but decades\, and perhaps generations\, to achieve. They seek deep transformation in the places they serve – bringing structural changes like good education\, just governance\, and improving the health and well-being of all their neighbours. Alongside this they have built lively\, inclusive\, Christian congregations. We should listen to their story.”\nSteve Chalke -Founder & Leader Oasis Global \n“In all the window dressing around how to fix the church or make it more connected to our massively disruptive times Looking for Lydia changes the conversation. It turns most of our pretensions on their head as it brings us back to the God who radically meets us in the other. The story in this book is grounded in the practiced life of a community of God’s people. I can’t recommend it more highly. It’s the disruptive Spirit calling us to God’s future.” \nAlan J Roxburgh – Journal of Missional Practice & The Missional Network \nLooking for Lydia: Encounters that Shape the Church is available for purchase directly through Amazon. If you would prefer not to order the book via Amazon\, you can order a copy via Bonny Downs Baptist Church: https://forms.gle/FGQq7DV7LqFKA6NS8 \nRed Letter Christians UK is a relational network for those who want to live for Jesus and Justice. Our focus is connecting and supporting Christian activists and community leaders across the UK. We aim to provide practical tools for developing advocacy and organising skills alongside deepening spiritual resilience. We seek out spiritual and tactical resonance\, creating opportunities to pursue justice together. We aim to amplify prophetic voices from the margins who bring spiritual depth\, experience and a healthy dose of challenge to national conversations.
