SUMMARY:🕊️ Peace on Earth & the Politics of Christmas 🕊️
DESCRIPTION:The Alternative Seminary and\nKirkridge Retreat and Study Center Invite You\nCan we liberate Christmas from its cultural captivity and rediscover the truly prophetic story that speaks to the crises of our world today?\nPeace On Earth and the\nPolitics of Christmas\n\nA VIRTUAL PROGRAM\n\nSaturday morning\, December 2\, 2023\n10:30 am – 12:30 pm EST\nMuch of the Christian church in the United States has been co-opted by an American gospel of prosperity\, racism\, violence\, and militant nationalism. The celebration of Christmas is a victim of that co-optation: It is wrapped in innocent\, Hallmark-card imagery. But in fact\, the biblical texts describing the coming of Jesus are making powerful assertions about the politics of the Bible that speak very much to our contemporary global crises.  In this virtual program\, we will explore the “nativity narratives” in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke to see how they express core biblical themes of justice and liberation.  We will “un-domesticate” these stories and reflect on how they are truly challenging us to a revolutionary discipleship – an especially urgent need as we witness more violence in Jesus’ homeland. This program will be facilitated by Will O’Brien\, coordinator of The Alternative Seminary. A perfect event for Advent. \nRegistration is required.  The cost for the program is $20 donation (or whatever you can afford).Register today!   https://bit.ly/PoliticsofChristmas2023\nOur Facebook page is here.\nFor more information contact Will O’Brien at (267) 339-8989 or willobrien59@gmail.com\n\nThe Alternative Seminary is a program of biblical and theological study and reflection designed to foster an authentic biblical witness in the modern world. \nThe Kirkridge Retreat and Study Center is a progressive Christian and interfaith retreat center in the beautiful Pocono mountains just an hour and a half north of Philadelphia.  It has provided a place for rest and renewal to pilgrims along life’s journey. Our retreats\, our hospitality\, our gorgeous vistas\, and our sacred grounds have blessed\, and continue to bless\, countless lives.

SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Andrew Whitehead
DESCRIPTION:Power. Fear. Violence. These three idols of Christian nationalism are corrupting American Christianity.\nAndrew Whitehead is a leading scholar on Christian nationalism in America and speaks widely on its effects within Christian communities. In this book\, he shares his journey andreveals how Christian nationalism threatens the spiritual lives of American Christians and the church. \nWhitehead shows how Christians harm their neighbors when they embrace the idols of power\, fear\, and violence. He uses two key examples – racism and xenophobia – to demonstrate that these idols violate core Christian beliefs. Through stories\, he illuminates expressions of Christianity that confront Christian nationalism and offer a faithful path forward. \nAndrew Whitehead’s latest book “American Idolatry” published by Brazos Press\, encourages further conversation about what Christian nationalism threatens\, how to face it\, and why it is vitally important to do so. It will help identify Christian nationalism and build a framework that makes sense of the relationship between faith and the current political and cultural context. \nJoin Red Letter Christians on Zoom with Andrew Whitehead and Shane Claiborne on September 28th at 7 PM ET to take a deep dive into his newest book\, “American Idolatry“. \nRegister to join us on Zoom or join Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.

SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Mark Beckwith\, "Seeing the Unseen"
DESCRIPTION:A bishop and gun safety activist offers a way forward from opposing viewpoints. \nInstead of dismissing those whose views and experiences are different from our own\, the author argues that we must look directly at them and see the goodness that is inherent in all things. From the language we use to the imperative to understand and include\, we have a duty to work through opposition and build community. \nBishop Beckwith describes it this way: “We are trained to think\, yet the cultural emphasis on thinking has not be applied to our ability to see . . . We are not as well trained in seeing the world’s fullness—pain and joy\, compassion and cruelty. We regularly receive glimpses of pain and joy\, but they are often presented in such a way as to reinforce our thinking.” \nOrdained in the Episcopal Church in 1979\, Mark Beckwith served parishes in Connecticut\, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Elected Bishop of Newark (NJ)\, he served in that capacity for twelve years until his retirement in 2018. As an active bishop\, he helped reorganize the Coalition of Religious Leaders of New Jersey and served as President. In the wake of gang violence in Newark\, he helped found the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace. With a local Rabbi and Imam from that coalition\, he appeared several times on Morning Joe\, and did two PBS interview shows hosted by Jon Meacham. The three of them co-hosted A Matter of Faith\, a NJ Public TV show that focused on local issues. He currently serves as the Bishop Liaison for Bishops United Against Gun Violence\, a network of 100 bishops he co-founded after the Newtown\, Ct. killings in 2012. He is the co-founder of Faith Leaders for Ending Gun Violence\, a national ecumenical group of diverse religious leaders. He has been part of the leadership team for Braver Angels\, a national movement that seeks to depolarize America. He is the author of Seeing the Unseen: Beyond Prejudices\, Paradigms and Party Lines (Morehouse Publishing\, 2022). He offers spiritual direction and coaching for clergy. A graduate of Amherst College and Yale Divinity School\, he lives in Jaffrey\, New Hampshire. His passion is to invite people to look beyond and beneath their political and theological positions\, which in today’s climate of polarization can be overly confining and find hope and blessing – and a way forward. \nJoin Red Letter Christians on Zoom with Mark Beckwith and Shane Claiborne on August 27th at 7 PM ET to take a deep dive into his newest book\, “Seeing the Unseen“. \nRegister to join us on Zoom or join Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.

SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Dr. Jemar Tisby\, "How to Fight Racism"
DESCRIPTION:How do we effectively confront racial injustice? We need to move beyond talking about racism and start equipping ourselves to fight against it. \nIn this follow-up to the New York Times Bestseller The Color of Compromise\, Jemar Tisby offers an array of actionable items to confront racism. How to Fight Racism introduces a simple framework—the A.R.C. Of Racial Justice—that teaches readers to consistently interrogate their own actions and maintain a consistent posture of anti-racist behavior. \nThe A.R.C. Of Racial Justice is a clear model for how to think about race in productive ways: \nAwareness: educate yourself by studying history\, exploring your personal narrative\, and grasping what God\nsays about the dignity of the human person. \nRelationships: understand the spiritual dimension of race relations and how authentic connections make\nreconciliation real and motivate you to act. \nCommitment: consistently fight systemic racism and work for racial justice by orienting your life to it. \nTisby offers practical tools for following this model and suggests that by applying these principles\, we can help dismantle a social hierarchy long stratified by skin color. He encourages rejection passivity and active participation in the struggle for human dignity. There is hope for transforming our nation and the world\, and you can be part of the solution. \nJemar Tisby is the author of the New York Times bestselling book\, The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the Church’s Complicity in Racism\, How to Fight Racism\, and How to Fight Racism: Young Reader’s Edition. He is also a Professor of History at Simmons College of Kentucky in Louisville. Jemar has been a co-host of the “Pass the Mic” podcast since its inception seven years ago. His writing has been featured in The Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, and the New York Times among others. He is a frequent commentator on outlets such as NPR and CNN’s New Day program. He speaks nationwide on the topics of racial justice\, U.S. history and Christianity. Jemar earned his PhD in history and he studies race\, religion\, and social movements in the 20th century. You can follow his work through his newsletter\, Footnotes\, and on social media at @JemarTisby. \nJoin Red Letter Christians on Zoom with Dr. Jemar Tisby and Shane Claiborne on July 23rd at 7 PM ET to take a deep dive into his newest book\, “How to Fight Racism: Courageous Christianity and the Journey Toward Racial Justice”. \nRegister to join us on Zoom or join Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.

SUMMARY:Death Penalty Action's 30th Annual "Starvin' for Justice" Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty
DESCRIPTION:Red Letter Christians\, in partnership with dozens of other national and local organizations\, is sponsoring this summer’s annual “Fast and Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty” from June 29 to July 2 in Washington\, DC.  You’re invited to join us!\nThursday\, June 29 through Sunday\, July 2: The 30th Annual “Starvin’ for Justice” Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty at the US Supreme Court in Washington\, DC. This highly visual symbolic protest event draws death penalty opponents from across the country and from other countries. \nThe purpose of the event is to maintain a presence at the Supreme Court between the dates of anniversaries the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in practice in 1972\, and when new laws were upheld in 1976. \nFor these four days\, death penalty abolitionists from around the country will gather at the steps of the Supreme Court to call for an end to capital punishment in the United States. It is an energizing grassroots week of training\, advocacy\, action\, community and education. Tens of thousands of tourists and locals\, from all over the U.S. and throughout the world\, pass by our vigil and table\, so the opportunity for dialogue and discussion at a real grass-roots level is invaluable to the movement. \nAdditionally\, each evening we hear stories from murder victim family members\, death row exonerees\, death row families\, and leaders in the national abolition movement. Note that fasting is optional\, and participation can be as much or as little as you want it to be – come for all four days\, or just for a few hours. You can also join the online component to watch and listen to our daily teach-ins virtually. \nFind out more and register at www.abolition.org. \nPrograms starting at 6pm each evening of the four days will feature leading figures like Rev. Sharon Risher\, whose mother and two cousins were killed in the Charleston church shooting\, noted death penalty expert Robert Dunham\, Randy Gardner\, brother of the last man executed in the US by firing squad\, Charles Keith and Rodrick Reed\, brothers of high-profile innocent prisoners awaiting exoneration\, Ohio’s Kevin Keith and Texas’s Rodney Reed\, Rev. SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Sharon Tubbs: They Got Daddy: One Family's Reckoning with Racism and Faith
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Tubbs began her professional career as a newspaper reporter and editor. In a career that spanned seventeen years\, she worked briefly for the Philadelphia Inquirer then for the Tampa Bay Times. As a journalist\, she covered various beats that included small-town government\, local crime\, and national religious issues. Today\, Sharon Tubbs is a writer\, inspirational speaker\, and the director of a nonprofit organization that empowers under-resourced residents in Fort Wayne\, Indiana\, to live healthier lives. \nThis book\, They Got Daddy: One Family’s Reckoning with Racism\, has been called “an unforgettable journey through racism and faith across the generations.” \nJanuary 15\, 1959—a day that changed one family forever. White supremacists kidnapped and severely beat rural Alabama preacher Israel Page\, nearly killing him because he had sued a White sheriff’s deputy for injuries suffered in a car crash. After “they” “got Daddy\,” Israel Page’s children began leaving the Jim Crow South\, the event leaving an indelible mark on the family and its future. Decades later\, the events of that day fueled journalist Sharon Tubbs’s epic quest to learn who had “gotten” her mother’s daddy and why. \nThey Got Daddy follows Tubbs on her moving journey from Fort Wayne\, Indiana\, to the back roads and rural churches of Alabama. A powerful revelation of the sustaining and redemptive power of faith and unflinching testimony to the deeply embedded effects of racism across the generations\, it demonstrates how the search for the truth can offer a chance at true healing. \nJoin Red Letter Christians on Zoom with Sharon Tubbs and Chris Lahr on May 22nd at 7 PM ET to take a deep dive into “They Got Daddy: One Family’s Reckoning with Racism and Faith.” You don’t want to miss it! \nRegister to join us on Zoom or join us Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.

SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Katelyn Beaty\, Celebrities for Jesus
DESCRIPTION:Many Christian leaders use their fame and influence to great effect. Whether that popularity resides at the local church level or represents national or international influence\, many leaders have effectively said to their followers\, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” But fame that is cultivated for its own sake\, without attendant spiritual maturity and accountability\, has a shadow side that runs counter to the heart of the gospel. Celebrity – defined as social power without proximity – has led to abuses of power\, the cultivation of persona\, and a fixation on profits. \nIn light of the fall of famous Christian leaders in recent years\, the time has come for the church to reexamine its relationship to celebrity. Award-winning journalist Katelyn Beaty explores the ways fame has reshaped the American church\, explains how and why celebrity is woven into the fabric of the evangelical movement\, and identifies many ways fame has gone awry in recent years. She shows us how evangelical culture is uniquely attracted to celebrity gurus over and against institutions\, and she offers a renewed vision of ordinary faithfulness\, helping us all keep fame in its proper place. \nJoin Red Letter Christians on Zoom with Katelyn Beaty and Shane Claiborne on April 27th at 7 PM ET to take a deep dive into “Celebrities for Jesus.” You don’t want to miss it! \nRegister to join us on Zoom or join us Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.

SUMMARY:Moral Monday Against Gun Violence in Nashville
DESCRIPTION:Democracy is under attack in Tennessee. But this is a historic moment. You have probably seen what commenced in Nashville over the past few weeks\, even during the heart of Holy Week. Three Tennessee legislators raised their voices against gun violence after the mass shooting nearby and the Tennessee House of Representatives expelled two young Black legislators. \nJustin Jones has been a friend and collaborator with us at Red Letter Christians for many years. He has shown up over and over with us at RLC\, so we want to show up for him\, and for Justin J. Pearson and the Tennessee 3! What’s happening in Tennessee is bigger than the three of them\, and affects all of us. And we don’t want to just watch\, we want to participate in the history-making. SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Shane Claiborne\, Rethinking Life
DESCRIPTION:Join Lisa Sharon Harper and Shane Claiborne as they discuss his new book\,  Rethinking Life: Embracing the Sacredness of Every Person\, on Sunday\, February 26th at 7pm ET. \nDrawing on Scripture\, church history\, and his own story\, Shane explores how a passion for social justice issues surrounding life and death -such as war\, gun ownership\, the death penalty\, racial injustice\, abortion\, poverty\, and the environment – intersects with our faith as we advocate for life in its totality. \nMany of us wonder how to think about and act on issues of life and death beyond abortion and the death penalty – yet the heated debates in our churches and the confusion of our own hearts sometimes feel overwhelming. \nJoin us as we discuss\, “What does a balanced\, Christian view of what it means to be “pro-life” really look like?” \nRegister to join on Zoom or join us on Red Letter Christian’s Facebook\, YouTube\, or website live.
