DESCRIPTION:As a part of our Professional Training Series to equip our movement for effective direct action\, we are delighted to have Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons lead us with a webinar in “How to Write an Op-ed” where you will learn to craft concise\, effective\, and prophetic commentary. \nPublishing an op-ed is a powerful tool to speak out against Christian nationalism and present an alternative Christian witness to the public. This in-depth training will guide you from picking an idea\, drafting your content\, and pitching it to a news outlet for them to publish. We’ll discuss popular outlets and who decides what gets published and why. You will depart the training ready to place your first op-ed\, or new ideas for seasoned writers. \nThe training is led by Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons\, who has written or ghost-written more than 200 op-eds in the New York Times\, Washington Post\, MSNBC\, CNN\, and many other publications. He’s currently the Communications Director at BJC. He earned his undergraduate degree from American University in Washington\, D.C.\, and his Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. DESCRIPTION:Join Father Adam Bucko in conversation with RLC’S Mary Grace Puszka to discuss “Let Your Heartbreak Be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation” (Orbis Books\, 2022). Written against the backdrop of the pandemic and America’s reckoning with growing poverty\, injustice and systemic racism\, this book is uniquely positioned to accompany us through the disillusionment and violence of trying times. It offers reflections\, stories\, and insights from Adam Bucko’s years of prayer and activism\, including in the streets with homeless and LGBTQ youth\, in new monastic communities across the world\, and as an Episcopal priest in an engaged contemplative community. \nIndeed\, Father Adam Bucko has been a committed voice in the movement for the renewal of Christian Contemplative Spirituality and the growing New Monastic movement. He has taught engaged contemplative spirituality in Europe and the United States and has authored “Let Your Heartbreak be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation” and co-authored “Occupy Spirituality: A Radical Vision for a New Generation” and “The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living.” \nCommitted to an integration of contemplation and just practice\, he cofounded an award-winning non-profit\, the Reciprocity Foundation\, where he spent 15 years working with homeless youth living on the streets of New York City\, providing spiritual care\, developing programs to end youth homelessness\, and articulating a vision for spiritual mentoring in a post-religious world. SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb is founder and president of Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem\, Palestine. Raheb is the most widely published Palestinian theologian to date\, including his Orbis books Faith in the Face of Empire and\, with Suzanne Henderson\, The Cross in Contexts: Suffering and Redemption in Palestine. He received the 2017 Tolerance Ring Award from the European Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the 2015 Olof Palme Prize\, the 2012 German Media Prize\, the 2006 International Mohammad Nafi Tschelebi Peace Award\, and the 2007 German Peace Award of Aachen. He holds a doctorate in theology from Philipps University\, Marburg\, Germany\, and an honorary doctorate from Concordia University\, Chicago. \nWe will be discussing his book “Decolonizing Palestine” challenges the weaponization of biblical texts to support the current settler-colonial state of Israel. Raheb argues that some of the most important theological concepts –Israel\, the land\, election\, and chosen people – must be decolonized in a paradigm shift in Christian theological thinking about Palestine. Decolonizing Palestine is a timely book that builds on the latest research in settler-colonialism and human rights to place traditional theological themes within the wider socio-political context of settler colonialism as it is practiced by the modern nation-state of Israel. The celebration of Christmas is a victim of that co-optation: It is wrapped in innocent\, Hallmark-card imagery. But in fact\, the biblical texts describing the coming of Jesus are making powerful assertions about the politics of the Bible that speak very much to our contemporary global crises.  In this virtual program\, we will explore the “nativity narratives” in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke to see how they express core biblical themes of justice and liberation.  We will “un-domesticate” these stories and reflect on how they are truly challenging us to a revolutionary discipleship – an especially urgent need as we witness more violence in Jesus’ homeland. He is frequently featured in major national media\, such as CNN\, MSNBC\, NPR\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and others. Jones writes a weekly newsletter for those dedicated to the work of truth-telling\, repair\, and healing from the legacy of white supremacy in American Christianity at www.whitetoolong.net.< \nHe holds a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University\, an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary\, and a B.S. in computing science and mathematics from Mississippi College. SUMMARY:RLC Book Club with Mark Beckwith\, "Seeing the Unseen"
DESCRIPTION:A bishop and gun safety activist offers a way forward from opposing viewpoints. \nInstead of dismissing those whose views and experiences are different from our own\, the author argues that we must look directly at them and see the goodness that is inherent in all things. From the language we use to the imperative to understand and include\, we have a duty to work through opposition and build community. \nBishop Beckwith describes it this way: “We are trained to think\, yet the cultural emphasis on thinking has not be applied to our ability to see . . . We are not as well trained in seeing the world’s fullness—pain and joy\, compassion and cruelty. We regularly receive glimpses of pain and joy\, but they are often presented in such a way as to reinforce our thinking.” \nOrdained in the Episcopal Church in 1979\, Mark Beckwith served parishes in Connecticut\, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Elected Bishop of Newark (NJ)\, he served in that capacity for twelve years until his retirement in 2018. As an active bishop\, he helped reorganize the Coalition of Religious Leaders of New Jersey and served as President. In the wake of gang violence in Newark\, he helped found the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace. With a local Rabbi and Imam from that coalition\, he appeared several times on Morning Joe\, and did two PBS interview shows hosted by Jon Meacham. The three of them co-hosted A Matter of Faith\, a NJ Public TV show that focused on local issues. He currently serves as the Bishop Liaison for Bishops United Against Gun Violence\, a network of 100 bishops he co-founded after the Newtown\, Ct. killings in 2012. He is the co-founder of Faith Leaders for Ending Gun Violence\, a national ecumenical group of diverse religious leaders. He has been part of the leadership team for Braver Angels\, a national movement that seeks to depolarize America. He is the author of Seeing the Unseen: Beyond Prejudices\, Paradigms and Party Lines (Morehouse Publishing\, 2022). He offers spiritual direction and coaching for clergy. A graduate of Amherst College and Yale Divinity School\, he lives in Jaffrey\, New Hampshire. DESCRIPTION:Red Letter Christians\, in partnership with dozens of other national and local organizations\, is sponsoring this summer’s annual “Fast and Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty” from June 29 to July 2 in Washington\, DC.  You’re invited to join us!\nThursday\, June 29 through Sunday\, July 2: The 30th Annual “Starvin’ for Justice” Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty at the US Supreme Court in Washington\, DC. This highly visual symbolic protest event draws death penalty opponents from across the country and from other countries. \nThe purpose of the event is to maintain a presence at the Supreme Court between the dates of anniversaries the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in practice in 1972\, and when new laws were upheld in 1976. \nFor these four days\, death penalty abolitionists from around the country will gather at the steps of the Supreme Court to call for an end to capital punishment in the United States. It is an energizing grassroots week of training\, advocacy\, action\, community and education. Tens of thousands of tourists and locals\, from all over the U.S. and throughout the world\, pass by our vigil and table\, so the opportunity for dialogue and discussion at a real grass-roots level is invaluable to the movement. \nAdditionally\, each evening we hear stories from murder victim family members\, death row exonerees\, death row families\, and leaders in the national abolition movement. Note that fasting is optional\, and participation can be as much or as little as you want it to be – come for all four days\, or just for a few hours.
